The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences is one of five faculties at the University of Adelaide. Comprised of five schools and a number of disciplines, research centres and institutes, the faculty is focused on education excellence and innovative research in the health sciences. Programs taught out of the faculty train medical practitioners: surgeons, dentists, nurses and psychologists and other health professionals. The faculty boasts one of the largest concentrations of leading researchers, academic teachers and clinical titleholders working across the areas of health.

A prestigious opportunity now exists for a new Dean and Head of School to provide outstanding academic and administrative leadership to the Adelaide School of Dentistry. Ranked as one of the highest in Australia and 31st in the world for Dentistry, the School is now going through an exciting and innovative phase in its long and prestigious history.

The Adelaide Dental School is located in the new state-of-the-art teaching space Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences building, situated in the South Australian Health and Biomedical Precinct, adjacent to the new Royal Adelaide Hospital and SAHMRI. The precinct is one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere with the Dental School ideally placed at its centre.

Motivated by the opportunity to shape a contemporary, outstanding School of Dentistry, the Dean and Head of School, will bring a vision to shape a long-term strategy that will promote and enhance the national and international profile of the School and the University.

We are seeking a candidate who has exemplary interpersonal skills to inspire, motivate and develop staff, and promote a culture of high engagement, commitment and performance.

The successful candidate will be appointed as Head of School for a fixed-term period of five (5) years with the potential for extension for a further term of up to five years subject to performance and the University’s procedures for the appointment of Heads of School.

Salary: (Level E) $178,851 per annum + Loadings.

Superannuation: An employer contribution of 17% may apply


Position requirements

To be successful you should have:

  • Registrable as a Dentist in South Australia.
  • Established reputation as a respected leader including experience in strategy development and planning, leading change, and evidence of an effective contribution to a leadership team.
  • The ability to effectively manage all operational aspects of a School including demonstrated financial acumen.
  • Demonstrated ability to forge meaningful external relationships and represent the School and the University locally, nationally and internationally, to community, industry and other academic institutions and partners.
