We speak with Dr Ian Abbs as part of our Ccentric Interview Series

Dr Ian Abbs has been the Medical Director of Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust since January 2011. He joined Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust as a consultant renal physician and honorary senior lecturer at King’s College London in 1994 and has had a distinguished clinical and academic career, which has included a broad range of senior management positions including at Barking, Havering and Redbridge Hospitals, where he was the Trust’s Medical Director.

In addition to his clinical work, Ian has played a key role in the development of Clinical Academic Groups, the development and management units of King’s Health Partners, and was closely involved in work to integrate with Lambeth and Southwark community services.

In this interview he discusses clinician leadership in the healthcare and academic sectors; the disciplines and challenges of working in the National Health Service (NHS) as well as his advice to future aspiring leaders.
