The Faculty of Medicine and Health has a long-standing commitment to building the pipeline for rural-trained health professionals and to improving the health of people in rural, regional, and remote communities. This commitment has been supported by continuous program funding by the Federal Government. The University has three University Departments of Rural Health (UDRH) located in Broken Hill, Dubbo/Orange, and Norther Rivers/Lismore. Each of the three University Departments of Rural Health (UDRH) are multi-professional and multi-disciplinary delivering clinical education and research. The UDRHs have strong collaborative relationships with the health services and communities within which they are located.

We are seeking to appoint an academic leader, at the level of Associate Professor/Professor or Professor of Practice, as Head of the University Department of Rural Health (UDRH) Dubbo campus.  This is a senior management position, and the successful candidate is expected to have strong skills in stakeholder engagement, education, and/or research in rural and remote health, and in operational management. The Head will work as part of the leadership team of the cognate school (Currently Sydney Medical School). The Head’s role incorporates leadership of the UDRH’s teaching and research programs and the management of external relationships including with local communities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Federal and State Governments, local health districts and health professional councils and with existing health providers in the region. The Head will contribute to the Faculty and School’s strategic planning related to rural and regional health and work closely with the rural schools in Lismore and Broken Hill.

The successful candidate will be a PhD-qualified academic in a field relevant to rural, regional and remote health, or a medical professional with a national or international reputation in the field, and eligible for registration in NSW as a health professional. You will have a track record in leading multi-disciplinary health professional teams. You will have a sound understanding of the learning needs of different health professionals and a communication style that is engaging and supportive of a positive workplace culture. The successful candidate will have the ability to lead and develop academics and to work in partnership with professional staff. You will have demonstrated experience in financial and in operational management practices.

The successful candidate must have established relationships with key academic, industry and/or professional institutions, partners and stakeholders, that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the school, faculty and University.

The successful candidate will be offered a 5-year fixed-term position on a full-time basis, with the possibility for renewal subject to an assessment of performance. The appointment is also subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.  Relocation assistance will also be provided if required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
