About the Unit

Be challenged and imagine with us

The University of Newcastle stands apart in its vision and commitment to investment in the discipline of General Practice and Primary Care. The last few years have seen a divestment by both government and academic institutions from supporting the discipline and the University of Newcastle has identified the need to make a difference.

We are seeking to appoint an authority in the discipline of General Practice and Primary Care.

Reporting to the Dean & Head of the School of Medicine and Public Health, the Professor/Associate Professor and Head of General Practice and Primary Care will provide academic leadership and foster excellence in teaching, research and professional activities and policy development.

A key element of this role is actively building and supporting the network of General Practitioners within the School of Medicine and Public Health and the Joint Medical Program (JMP) and promoting the Discipline of General Practice and Primary Care with external parties such as Primary Health Networks and discipline training organisations.

The role will lead and drive research in General Practice and Primary Care, represent this Discipline in key research organisations and actively participate in representing primary care in the “One Footprint” research network of the University.

The incumbent is expected to maintain a highly visible presence across the School and JMP locations, and the potential exists to be located in one of the School’s sites, reflecting the commitment to build research GP and Primary Care focus.

How will you inspire us?

  • You will have completed a doctoral or equivalent vocational qualification, accreditation and standing in health-related areas, including attaining eligibility for Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP).
  • Demonstrated sustained, significant-high-quality contribution to leadership, with evidence of collaborations and partnerships at national and where appropriate international level.
  • Outstanding stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Distinguished Leadership in Learning and Teaching.
  • Demonstrated recent ability to achieve teaching quality as indicated by internal and external surveys and outcomes for students that will improve or innovate in response to feedback.
  • Demonstrated record of quality and impactful publication or non-traditional research output in high-quality outlets as well as major funding initiatives.
  • Skills in active and effective record of supervising honours and masters research projects and Higher Degrees by Research students.
  • Value equity and diversity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of workplace obligations to, and experience in leading and cultivating workplace practices and behaviours that promote, support and maintain a safe, healthy, equitable, diverse and respectful workplace.

We provide opportunities for all people regardless of their background and experience, and this philosophy is reflected across all we do.
